Ubu en Suisse, postal de um grupo de 8 postais criados por Enrico Baj e editados como Publicação Interna pelo Colégio de Patafísica

Os postais foram, mal apareceram, apropriados e usados como material iconográfico por diversas avantgardes artísticas do séc. XX. Hoje continuam-no a ser, e uma recente manifestação disso é esta edição de uma série de postais com paisagens da Suiça atravessadas pelo personagem Ubu, espécie de homem sem qualidades celebrizado com a peça de Alfred Jarry, Rei Ubu. Esta série de postais, que data de Abril de 2004 (o que no calendário patafísico corresponde a 131 E.P.), é uma série de de imagens de postais turísticos clássicos da Suiça percorridas pela figura informe de Ubu: se os postais humorísticos podem ser vistos por George Orwell como a "visão Sancho Pança da vida" , não admira também que os postais turísticos (pela pobreza dos clichés, pelo ócio a que convidam, pela pouca seriedade que inspiram) tenham sido associados ao Ubu, herói patafísico que Jean Baudrillard definia com expressões como "o estado gasoso e caricatural", "o esplendor do vazio"…

As soon as they appeared, postcards have been appropriated and used as an iconographic material by diverse artistic avant-gardes of the XXth century. Today, they keep being used: an expression of that is this edition of postcards with Switzerland landscapes and the character Ubu, a sort of man without qualities that became famous with Alfred Jarry’s play, King Ubu. This postcard series, published in April 2004 (which is 131 E.P. in the pataphysical calendar), is a series of images of classic tourist postcards of Switzerland mixed with the formless figure of Ubu. If humorist postcards can be seen by George Orwell as the “Sancho Panza view of life”, there’s no surprise in the fact that tourist postcards (because of the poverty of clichés, because of the leisure they invite to and the seriousness they don’t inspire… ) have been associated to Ubu, a pataphysics hero defined by Jean Baudrillard with expressions such as the “caricatural and gaseous state”, “the splendor of the void”…

A exposição Serralves 2009 A Coleccção patente no Museu de Serralves, no Porto, até Março de 2010 apresenta-se como dedicando especial atenção às "formas de edição múltipla da obra de arte através do livro de artista, do som e da fotografia". Nestas diversas formas de edição, que passam pelo livro, pela revista e pelo cartaz, assim como pelo filme e o disco, inclui-se também, como é previsível, o postal. Pleased to meet you de Fernando José Pereira e John Shankie é uma obra composta pelo cartaz publicitando Portugal, e por um expositor de postais com 100 postais ilustrados que reproduzem o cartaz, lembrando imediatamente os mais recentes postais de Veneza de Aleksandra Mir na 53ª Bienal, aqui comentados. Dedicado à reprodução das obras de arte mas integrando-se ele mesmo nela, constituindo o seu próprio corpo, o postal tem na obra de Fernando José Pereira e John Shankie várias faces: ele é postal turístico apropiado com tom irónico, mostrando um Portugal de não lugares com Fords e Carrefours, ele é reprodução da obra de arte ao dispôr do visitante de Serralves e do espectador da obra Pleased to meet you, ele é parte da própria obra de arte dando-lhe uma interactividade e um dinamismo no qual os espectadores são também desconhecidos intervenientes, divulgadores, ou, eventualmente, subversores.

The exhibition Serralves 2009 The collection presented in the Museu de Serralves until March 2010 is announced as being specially attentive to "forms of the multiple edition of the artwork such as artists’ books, sound and photography". These different forms of edition include books, posters, magazines, films, discs and of course, postcards. Pleased to meet you by Fernando José Pereira and John Shankie is composed by the poster which advertises Portugal, and by the postcard display rack containing 100 picture postcards that reproduce the poster; this artwork reminds us of Venice postcards by Aleksandra Mir in the 53th Biennale, here commented. Postcards, which reproduce artworks but also take part of them, get different dimensions in the work of Fernando José Pereira and John Shankie: they're tourist postcards subverted in an ironic tone (Portugal as a country of no-places, with Fords and Carrefours); they're a reproduction of the artwork distributed to Serralves visitors and specially to the public of the artwork Pleased to meet you; they're an element of the artwork, providing interactivity and dynamism as well as giving the public the possibility of interfering, divulgating or even subverting the artwork.
