Is was just published a book that, judging by the title, seems very promising. This is a work that traces the path of epistolary communication from the letter to email, through the postcard. It aims at arguing that "the relation between old and new communication systems is more complex than allowed in current media theory". The idea is to explore "historically the symbolic and material representations of the presence through three media sites: a networked postal community of nineteenth-century letter writers; postcard correspondence of First World War soldiers; and a contemporary email discussion list.
